Harvest of the Month

Harvest of the Month

Harvest of the Month is an educational program that highlights a different California-grown product each month of the school year. Harvest of the Month cultivates a healthy food and farm connection by increasing students' exposure to seasonal foods while also supporting local farmers. Harvest of the Month taste tests are done each month in the cafeteria and along with the produce, teachers receive educational materials with information such as the nutrients, history, and recipes.

The objectives of Harvest of the Month are for students to increase their:

  • Access to fruits and vegetables through school meal programs, classrooms, school gardens, farmers' markets, grocery stores, community gardens, etc.
  • Preference for selected produce items through school-based activities, such as taste testing, farm-to-school field trips, and through menu offerings in the school meals program.
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with Sacramento County & California a grown fruits and vegetables and the rich agricultural bounty of the county and state.
