May 25, 2022 Parent Empowerment Dinner-Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage »
The final Parent Empowerment Dinner of the 2021-22 school year--and Robla's first ever Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month-- was held on Wednesday, May 25, 2022, hosted by Robla School District and the Roberts Family Development Center.
Guest speaker Mai Vang, Sacramento City Councilmember (District 8) spoke about her own journey as the oldest child of Hmong refugees from Laos and growing up in poverty in Sacramento. She shared how she aspired to step out of poverty and how her teachers encouraged her to pursue higher education. She spoke about her experiences as as an undergraduate college student, then as she pursued her Master's Degree in public health, which helped her in her efforts as a community organizer to improve health and educational outcomes for children and families in south Sacramento.
Live entertainment was provided by the Sacramento Mandarins drum corp, dancers from Laim Lam Lug, and a dinner of teriyaki chicken, lumpia, miso salad, and fried rice, along with coconut custard for dessert was made by the Robla Food Services Department and served by the principals. Student artwork was displayed in an art show played at the event: https://bit.ly/RSDAPPIArtShow2022 . The Roberts Family Development Center provided child care for parents attending with children.

Overall, the dinner was a great success, and we look forward to seeing you at our next Parent Empowerment Dinner in September!
